Our trees are locally grown in the USA, and we sell wholesale to horticulture professionals, large buyers, contractors, and also sell direct to individuals who are looking for high-quality native, rare, and hard-to-find tree specimens at wholesale pricing. We have a minimum 3 tree requirement to buy at wholesale pricing.
We deliver direct to the job site!
We grow organically, and do not use any chemical herbicides or pesticides in our tree nursery production. We weed our many thousands of trees manually by hand, and also control weeds by organic methods as well.
Our customers are nursery professionals, park commissions, cities, large land owners, contractors, and private individuals who prefer our safe, and specialized online purchase and private delivery service.
NOW is a great time to plant our trees! Our root-pruned trees can be planted almost any time of the year, as long as the ground is not deeply frozen, and our trees are properly planted with good soil preparation, mulched well… and kept watered!
Please remember that all of our root-pruned trees have up to 100% of their roots included.
All of our trees are grown above-ground (year around) in their ‘patented’ insulated tree bags, so the in-ground soil temperatures are actually better for the trees once you find their new permanent ‘in-ground’ planting locations. Ground soil temperatures are warmer in the winter, and cooler is the summer!
We are a Private Nursery located in northern Chester County on a private family farm, and sell our trees ONLINE only… and we deliver.
We grow over 100+ varieties of trees on multiple fields in Chester County, PA. We are located about 50 miles west of Philadelphia, PA.
Our trees are much lighter, and easier to lift, and to plant in the ground. They are grown in a custom organic growing mix which encourages more drainage and better root growth and development.
Our trees with root-pruned systems have up to 100% of their many feeder roots included and quickly start growing in their new environment once planted.
It is important to remember that these trees are grown in a well-drained custom mix so you want to make sure that you water the root ball… plus the surrounding soil area every two days to give the roots something to reach for.
We deliver to the Philadelphia 4 state region which includes PA, NJ, DE and MD. We have a 35 mile radius of Paoli, PA 19301 where we regularly deliver.
However, we also do custom deliveries for large out-of-state orders. Please call or email us to arrange.
We have many loyal local customers in Bryn Mawr, Villanova, Chadds Ford, Gladwyne, Glen Mills, Philadelphia, Berwyn, Downingtown, Valley Forge, Wayne, Princeton, Wilmington, Paoli, Wynnewood, Baltimore, Chester Springs, Washington DC, Exton, West Chester, Haverford, Media, Newtown Square, Ardmore, Elverson, Broomall, Malvern, Moorestown, Cherry Hill, Abington, and many more…
Air root-pruning occurs when a tree seedling’s root tips come into contact with either air in a specially designed air root-pruning pot… or the fabric sides of a root-pruning tree bag which stops the root tip ends from growing thus encouraging even more numerous secondary and lateral roots to now develop and grow.
This means that now you have far more healthy feeder roots to support the growth and survivability of the tree.
After one growing season, our larger tree seedlings are then re-potted into larger 7, 10, or 15 gallon root-pruning tree bags which then continue the root-pruning process until it grows into a much larger tree several years later.
This unique growing method encourages each root tip to then be replaced by many others… offering ‘exponentially’ far more roots… thus creating a very healthy root base with ‘many hundreds, or thousands’ of healthy white feeder roots producing a very robust tree ready to take off and adapt quickly when planted in your planting site.
Yes, it is more labor intensive for us, but our trees and customers benefit significantly. We do most of the hard work for you.
It is important to understand that these specially designed and ‘patented’ pots and tree bags are fully designed to prevent circling or girdling roots… that smooth wall pots do not.
Planting our trees is not difficult, and we are often asked by industry professionals on how to properly plant our root-pruned trees. The planting process is not hard, but yet very important to do properly for the tree’s health, survivability, and to enjoy the real magnificence of these tree specimens.
Medium to well-drained soil is generally best for trees. Amending (mixing) clay soils 20% – 25% thoroughly with a good top soil, lighter compost, or organic matter mostly around and slightly under the rootball to lighten up the soil and add air and water porosity is very important.
Mix it well into the current soil! This gives the tree a nutritional head-start, water retention, and the oxygen necessary for the roots to breathe and grow.
It is strongly recommended that you avoid planting trees in a location with frequent sitting water or high water tables which can stunt or kill them. Trees must have well aerated soil which is amended with quality top soil and organic mix to improve water drainage, but also to allow oxygen into the soil for better root development.
The size of the planting hole is determined by the size of the rootball. Dig the hole at least 1 1/2 times the root bag’s diameter and 1-2 inches deeper than the rootball. Remember that tree roots generally grow horizontally in the top 12″-15″ of the soil. This added space around and under the rootball is primarily where the mixed or ‘amended’ soil goes to add nutrients for the tree.
Wet the hole with the amended soil first, before planting the tree. Remove (cut off) the tree bag, and keep the tree rootball well watered before placing the tree in the hole. By doing this you are placing a moist rootball… into moist soil to lessen the planting shock. Taller trees over 6′ will need staking with (3) 5′ strong wood stakes to prevent from blowing over in high winds.
The planting depth of the tree is also critical. Never plant a tree too deep! If you plant the tree at the same soil depth as you see on top of the rootball (or better yet, 1 inch higher) and you will be fine. The goal is to keep the root flare (where the tree trunk base widens at the roots) above the soil.
Adding 2″ – 3″ layer of mulch above the soil in a 30″ circle (or larger) around the tree trunk above the rootball helps retain soil/root moisture and keeps the hot sun or wind from drying out the soil. Be sure not pile mulch up around the tree trunk.
Watering a newly planted tree is critical to the tree’s survival. We recommend watering the ground in a 2′ radius (4′ circumference) with a water wand on shower mode around the tree every other day for the first 3 – 4 months, plus during hot spells!
Remember: If you are feeling the heat, so are your trees! Depending on the time of year and weather, each tree should take 2-3 minutes of a medium ‘shower spray’ (not jet spray) directly to the soil around a 4′ circumference base of the tree.
Remember, the tree rootball has many hundreds of tender feeder roots in a well drained organic mix, so it will absorb the water quickly on hot or windy days, but it also ‘drains quickly’ and must be regularly replenished.
Our 1 1/2″ to 2″ caliper tree’s root systems will typically outperform larger 2 1/2″ caliper B&B trees in just 1 – 2 years after proper planting and watering.
Think about it. You are buying healthy trees from Brandywine Trees that are lighter and easier to plant, and which will experience little-to-no transplant shock because they have close to 100% of its tender feeder roots included. Whereas, the typical B&B tree has lost up to 85%-90% of its roots when dug from the ground.
We specialize in growing healthy trees that thrive and survive.
The traditional nursery grower plants their seedlings in the ground, which is certainly a great place to grow trees.
However, the challenge is in properly harvesting those trees from the ground… while also including all of the tree’s roots. According to horticulture scientists, up to 85% – 90% of the fine feeder roots are cut off when B&B deciduous trees are dug from the ground.
Not only does this leave the B&B tree highly stressed, it has 85%-90% fewer roots to feed itself and the tree is under significant stress for many years trying to overcome this loss while now also trying to grow, and survive.
Root-pruned trees grown in the proper root-pruning containers or tree bags offer up to 100% of the roots, plus a far more developed root system with literally thousands of fine feeder roots ready to take off and grow when planted… with little-to-no transplant shock to the tree!
It is very important to distinguish between root-pruning pots and regular smooth sided plastic pots (smooth sided plastic pots Do Not prune roots), and can create circling or girdling roots. Real air root-pruned trees have a beautiful and very fibrous root system that is second-to-none!
We are dedicated growers and grow over 90% of the trees that we sell from quality propagated seedlings, so we literally know every tree and its growth history. Many nurseries and garden centers are resellers and are selling someone else’s product with limited knowledge of the growth and health history of the trees.
On request, we do occasionally source specific tree varieties from other known growers when we are out of supply, or if we don’t grow that particular variety in order to meet a customer’s request.
Our healthy and hard-to-find trees with amazing root systems are very reasonably priced after we invest the 3-5 years of time, effort, and special attention to grow very healthy trees for you, our customer.
At Brandywine Trees, you are buying direct from the grower!
Many of our customers are large wholesale buyers who buy their trees in bulk, and bring their own trucks (and labor) to select, wrap & load up their tree purchases.
All of our deliveries require careful hand selection to meet our customer’s requirements, and a lot of time and special handling of the trees from the field to be wrapped, loaded, and protected. Then we drive to deliver our trees to the customer’s location.
Many of our trees are 8′ – 12′+ tall and require a truck and special handling and covers to protect the trees during transit. Our customers are buying excellent trees so we go the extra mile to select, prepare and safely deliver great trees to them.
We do our very best to keep everyone happy!
