Fall is a Great Time to Plant Trees!

Tree roots actually grow faster in the fall, which also means that your newly planted trees will root in faster.

After the upper tree photosynthesis and growth processes slow down in late summer, the tree’s energy is then focused on root growth to prepare the tree for winter and next spring’s growth. This is natures way of preparing to survive.

While the tree growth above the ground occurs mostly during the warmer spring and summer months, tree roots actually grow faster during the cooler fall season until ‘Soil Temperatures’ go below 40 degrees. 

In zone 6 that usually occurs in Mid-December. Soil Temperatures generally are 15 to 20 degrees warmer… than the outside Air temperatures.

This is another reason why its important to add 3”- 4” of good mulch on top of the roots to keep the moisture in and soil temperatures warmer in the colder months!  Soil temperatures 6”-12” below the surface will be about 15 – 20 degrees warmer than the outside air temperatures, especially under 3’=4’ of good mulch!

Planting trees in the fall also is less stressful on the trees since air temperatures are not as hot.
