Acer griseum, also known as Paperbark Maple, is one our absolute Top 5 Favorites. It is very hard-to-find, and is a highly prized small tree for any landscape. It is a slower growing 12′-20′ tree for mixed sun and shade in moist soil conditions that is generally perfect for all situations, and simply must be planted nearby to be fully appreciated year round. It has gorgeous exfoliating and peeling bark that is simply outstanding to see.
Acer griseum maples have tri-foliate leaves, and is a small, deciduous, oval to oval-rounded tree with small upright branching. It is well known and highly prized for its beautiful exfoliating copper orange to cinnamon reddish/brown bark and its showy orange to red fall color. The paperbark Maple is native to mixed forests in Asia, and grows well in mixed sun/shade in USDA zones 5-8.
